
Carmela Zegarelli Peter

Carmela gained her early training with her uncle, Richard Gibson, in San Mateo on a full
Ford Fundation Scholarship from The School of American Ballet in New York. She appeared as
a teenager in performances with the original Peninsula Ballet Theatre and The San
Francisco Ballet. She later studied at The Royal Conservatorium of Music in The Hague,
while training concurrently with The Netherlands Dance Theatre, particularly in Martha
Graham technique. In 1970, Carmela was invited to join The Dutch National Ballet, where
she remained for nine years, appearing as a soloist in numerous classical, modern and
Balanchine ballets.
Carmela married Zoltan Peter in 1978. From 1979 through 1986, she
performed with The San Francisco Ballet appearing in a number of featured roles and in
several national television specials.
Carmela has taught for Smuin Ballet/SF, Alvin Ailey American Dance
Theatre, Western Ballet Theatre School, The Zohar School of Dance and the Academy of
Ballet in San Francisco. Carmela is Co-Artistic Director of Young Artists Ballet Theatre. |
